Grammy-winning Nigerian star Temilade Openiyi, widely known as Tems, has opened up about a painful moment from the early days of her career, revealing that she was once booed off stage during a school performance.
In an interview with Big Boy TV, the Crazy Tings singer recalled how she had expected a warm reception as an up-and-coming artiste but was instead met with rejection.
“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation. But I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” she said.
Tems explained that moments like that did not deter her from chasing her dreams. According to her, some of the resistance she faced early on may have stemmed from her decision to stay original rather than perform covers or follow popular trends like many of her peers at the time.
Looking back, the award-winning singer said she is proud she remained true to her sound despite the pressure to conform, adding that the setbacks ultimately strengthened her resolve.
