Popular Nollywood actor and Lagos lawmaker, Desmond Elliot, has reacted to revelations surrounding the controversial impeachment attempt against former Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Elliot admitted that he signed the impeachment notice against Obasa “by mistake,” explaining that he assumed the move had the approval of the presidency.
The lawmaker revealed that he had just returned from South Africa, where he attended a wedding, and was still disoriented when the document was presented to him.
According to reports, the impeachment saga occurred during a January 2025 leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, where Obasa was briefly removed over allegations of misconduct before eventually returning after intervention reportedly linked to President Bola Tinubu.
Reacting to recent comments made by Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Elliot expressed surprise after learning that his political position was allegedly almost affected by the crisis.
“It came as a shock,” Elliot said while reacting to the controversy.
His comments have since triggered reactions online, with many Nigerians criticizing his explanation and questioning the level of political influence allegedly exercised from the presidency in Lagos politics.
Reacting on X, @Mujaahid_1 wrote:
“You are coming on National TV to say you think impeachment of a state’s speaker is from the President? lol. where are you driving to?”
Another user, @bright_iteshi, questioned Elliot’s judgment:
“So because a document is from the Presidency you just sign even though you don’t understand or agree with it. You have no mind of your own???”
A user identified as @Donniembaeyi also reacted:
“So this is the politics and democracy, presidency and give directives to impeach someone and you do it with no hesitation.”
Others argued that the incident further exposed how political decisions in Lagos State are allegedly controlled by powerful figures behind the scenes.
“When they want to deceive you, they will say there is a GAC that controls Lagos. However, it is obvious that the entire political architecture of Lagos is controlled by Tinubu,” @nadoches commented.
"It came as a shock."
