The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has named the 6,000-capacity Edo arena after the Afrobeats star Rema.
He made this announcement during the groundbreaking ceremony of the project in Benin on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.
Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, who hails from Benin, arrived in his home town for his homecoming concert scheduled to take place at the Ogbe Stadium.
He joined the governor for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena and laid the first block.
Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Governor Obaseki, who was excited to begin the construction of the Edo arena, said the project will be called ‘Rema’s Dome’.
He said, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena. The arena, which will be called ‘Rema’s Dome,’ is located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road in Benin City.”
According to Obaseki, the project, when completed, will host a wide range of events, from concerts and national conferences to symposiums and other large gatherings.
He believes that the arena will attract many visitors to the state, “allowing them to experience our rich culture and what we have to offer, which will create employment opportunities for our youths.”
