Ghana extends coronavirus lockdown by seven days

Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo

Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has announced a seven-day lockdown extension in the country's two main regions to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

The extension will take effect on Monday, coming after an initial two-week ban on movement around the capital Accra and Kumasi.

Ghana has since recorded a total of 378 positive coronavirus cases out of which at least six have died.

“It is important that we stay the course, and bear with the difficulties that come with it,” the president said in a national broadcast late Thursday.

“The final result, hopefully, will be freedom from the virus.”

Nigeria, amongst other countries in Africa, has also hinted at the possibility of its curfew extension to limit the effect of the virus on its people and economy as well.

Akufo-Addo said the Ghanaian government would absorb the whole of the electricity bills of the poorest citizens and 50 per cent for other residents and businesses for three months to ease the pain.
