Filmmaker Seun Egbegbe in custody for over 3 years after not meeting bail

Nigerian filmmaker, Olajide Kazeem, aka Seun Egbegbe, is still involved in a court case after he was arrested on February 10, 2017, for alleged serial frauds involving N39,098,100, $90,000 and £12,550.

The 43-year-old filmmaker has now spent 42 months in prison over his inability to meet his bail conditions.

According to reports from Premium Times, Egbegbe is now seeking a no-case submission in his fraud case. This means that he is asking the court for acquittal without having to present a defence.

A Lagos Federal High Court has fixed his no-case submission hearing for October 6, 2020.

It was gathered that Egebegbe allegedly obtained money fraudulently from forty Bureau De Change operators in Lagos for a period of two years, 2015 to 2017.

He was alleged to have pretended to be one of the Bureau De Change operators, claiming to change naira into foreign currency.

After he was arrested, Justice Oluremi Oguntoyinbo of the Federal High Court ruled that he be granted bail once he could meet bail conditions.

“One of the sureties must be a civil servant who has attained level 16 while the other surety must be a landowner in any part of Lagos metropolis.

“The landowner must submit a Certificate of Ownership of the landed property while the civil servant must submit his international passport to the court.

“The sureties must swear to an affidavit while the house and office addresses and a telephone number will be verified by the court.”

Egbegbe has however not been able to meet these conditions even after over three years.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that Nigerian actor, Leye Kuti, accused his colleagues in the film industry of abandoning Seun Egbegbe.

According to him, his colleagues had forgotten how much help a well-known film producer and marketer, Seun Egbegbe, provided for them.

Kuti had made the claims after many Nollywood stars failed to wish the film marketer a happy birthday. He expressed that Egbegbe had helped many of the actresses and actors in Nollywood with their careers.
