Landlords in Eritrea have agreed to suspend the payment of house rents for their tenants due to the effects of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Information Minister Yemane Meskel shared the good news on Twitter Sunday morning, adding that the act has become a trend lately, underlying the country’s rich culture of societal compassion/solidarity.

The minister did not reveal the duration of the rent suspension base on the agreement of the landlords.

Months back, the government banned layoffs and postponed the payment of utility bills, according to reports.

While the country's case of the respiratory illness remains one of the lowest in a region where tallies are into the 100s, with less than 40 cases, contributions to the National COVID-19 fund continue to pour at home and from abroad, the minister added.

Eritrea has a total of 39 recorded cases, 37 recoveries and two active cases of COVID-19 and has not recorded any new cases for weeks now.
