Drake wins $1m World Cup bet after Canada knocks out South Africa

Canadian rapper Drake on Sunday won more than $1 million after Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash.

The Toronto-born rapper had staked $770,000 (over N1 billion) on Canada to beat South Africa, with the wager carrying a potential payout of $1,001,000. Following Canada’s victory, Drake secured a profit of about $231,000.

Ahead of the match, Drake revealed on his instagram handle on Sunday that the bet was inspired by a message from South African DJ Black Coffee.

“@realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM I had to raise the STAKES,” he wrote while sharing a screenshot of the wager.

South Africa’s defeat brought an end to the country’s best-ever FIFA World Cup campaign. Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing runners-up in Group A, having qualified for the expanded 2026 tournament ahead of Nigeria.

The Hugo Broos-led side impressed during the group stage, recording a crucial 1-0 victory over South Korea to seal progression from a group that also featured co-hosts Mexico and Czechia.

However, their historic run came to a heartbreaking end against co-hosts Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, where midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored a stunning volley in second-half stoppage time to hand the hosts a 1-0 victory and a place in the Round of 16.

The result also marked Canada’s first-ever qualification for the Round of 16 at a FIFA World Cup.

Drake, who has become synonymous with high-stakes sports betting, has frequently placed public wagers on NBA Finals, UFC title fights, boxing bouts and major football tournaments.

His latest successful bet earned him a payout of $1,001,000 after staking $770,000 on Canada’s victory over South Africa.
