Media personality and broadcaster Ifedayo Olarinde, widely known as Daddy Freeze, has weighed in on the social media controversy surrounding a luxury Hermès handbag spotted with Margaret Obi, wife of former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

In a video statement shared on social media, the media personality clarified that he has no objection to the couple owning expensive items, noting that Peter Obi was already a successful businessman before entering public office.

However, he questioned the stark contrast between Obi's cultivated public image of personal frugality and the lavish accessories used by those in his immediate circle.

"I have no problem with Peter Obi’s wife carrying a luxury bag; her husband is a billionaire," Daddy Freeze said. "He was before he came into government. The only problem I have with him is he says he only has one shoe and one watch, but when you put yourself in a certain light, and things around you don’t seem to add to that light, there is a problem. He is honest and humble, but are people around him as prudent as he is?"

Highlighting the reported ₦250 million valuation of the green Hermès Kelly handbag, Daddy Freeze argued that such high-end displays contradict the former Anambra State governor's campaign messaging on modest living and cutting the cost of governance.

"If you market yourself as extremely prudent, I promise you a 250 million Naira Hermès bag is not a sign of being prudent," he added.

Daddy Freeze further turned his criticism toward supporters of the politician, calling out what he described as selective outrage and political bias.

"My problem is this: double standards, hypocrisy, selective morality," he stated. "And it’s not going to take us anywhere as a people. Imagine if na Remi Tinubu that was carrying a bag of 250 million Naira, wetin una go talk?"

Photos of Margaret Obi carrying a green Hermès Kelly 35 Malachite handbag surfaced online after being highlighted by political commentators, including Lere Olayinka.

Retail and resale estimates for the luxury designer item range between ₦237 million and ₦250 million (£131,900+).
