Deji Adeyanju alleges FCT Minister Wike is illegally seizing property for allies

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is facing a brewing land controversy, with prominent activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju accusing Minister Nyesom Wike of using his office to illegally seize plots from ordinary citizens and reallocate them to his personal circle.

Adeyanju's strong allegations follow a widely publicized confrontation involving Minister Wike and a military officer, A.M. Yerema, drawing intense scrutiny to the minister's management of Abuja’s land assets.

Adeyanju claims that since Wike took the FCT leadership role, he has been "acting beyond the bounds of the law" by revoking land titles without proper justification.

The activist asserts that these actions are not serving public interest, but private gain.

"You cannot seize someone’s land and transfer it to another person unless it serves the public interest, such as for constructing roads, hospitals, or airports. But what Wike appears to be doing is redirecting land owned by ordinary citizens to his children and political associates,” Adeyanju stated.

He cited the case of Santos Properties, which developed 30 hectares in Gaduwa, alleging that after all payments were made, Wike insisted on taking control of the entire property despite an existing agreement to return only a portion to the government for public use.

Adeyanju warned that Wike’s alleged "unpredictable revocation of property rights" is already having severe economic repercussions, noting that banks are reportedly becoming "hesitant to accept land titles as collateral."

Furthermore, the activist commended Officer A.M. Yerema for remaining firm despite what he termed "verbal abuse and intimidation from Wike," describing the minister's conduct as "reckless." Adeyanju criticized the involvement of the military in protecting land, suggesting Wike’s actions indicate a belief that "he is above the law."

He concluded that this conduct is disrupting land tenure systems and creating massive uncertainty for developers and homeowners, ultimately hindering crucial economic growth linked to the housing sector.
