Date for evacuating Nigerian returnees in India not yet approved- Minister of Foreign Affairs

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama has said that a date has not been approved for the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in India.

He made that revelation at a briefing of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 on Monday.

He explained that the ministry was getting overwhelmed with the logistics of evacuees and had to space the arrivals via their flight approval system.

Also, the Minister added that the Ministry was considering airlifting Nigerians with an indigenous carrier over Air India. "Negotiations were still ongoing with the Government of India," he hinted.

"The date for Air India has not been approved. We have a flight approval system and we want to space out times between the planes coming in so we would not be over-stretched. As much as possible, we want to use Nigerian carriers to bring evacuees home," Onyeama explained.
