Court fixes April 14 for Inquest into Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son

A Coroner’s Court sitting at the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos has scheduled April 14, 2026, to begin a formal inquest into the death of 21-month-old Master Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, son of award-winning author **Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie** and Dr. Ivara Esege.

Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji announced the date during a preliminary sitting, setting the stage for what is expected to be a closely watched legal process.

The toddler reportedly died on January 7, 2026, after receiving treatment at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing diagnostic procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.

Court proceedings revealed that he had initially been admitted for what was described as a worsening but mild illness.

Plans were underway to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States for advanced care when he was referred to Euracare for pre-flight procedures, including an MRI, lumbar puncture, and central line insertion. He passed away following the interventions.

Representing the family, Professor Kemi Pinheiro (SAN) told the court that the parents believe their son’s death was unnatural and occurred during medical treatment.

The family intends to present evidence alleging gross medical negligence, wrongful prescription, and improper administration of propofol.

Counsel also requested that Euracare preserve all relevant evidence from January 6, including CCTV footage, monitoring data, pharmacy logs, and internal communications. Five independent medical experts, alongside the child’s father, are expected to testify.

Magistrate Adetunji noted that the inquest was initiated by the Chief Coroner of Lagos State following a request from the Attorney-General, emphasizing that the matter is of public interest.

She stated that the autopsy report would serve as the foundation of the inquiry and outlined that Euracare would first open its defence when proceedings commence, followed by the family and Atlantis Hospital.

The inquest aims to determine the exact cause of death and clarify any potential liability as the legal process unfolds.
