'Christianity is now a joke' - Attacks as Pope Francis says sex abusers are children of God, deserve love

When discussing sex abusers, Pope Francis raised some eyebrows by referring to them as repugnant "enemies" who need to be punished as well as "children of God" who deserve compassion and "pastoral care."

Although the pontiff made his comments last month during a private meeting with a group of Jesuit priests in Hungary, an Italian Jesuit journal, La Civilta Cattolica, finally made them public on Tuesday, May 9.

A sexual predator, according to Francis, should be condemned "but as a brother" who still deserves to be loved and cared for.

The statement by the Pope garnered mixed reactions on social media as some agreed with him citing that since everyone is a child of God, they should be treated with respect and love.

Others, who felt the Pope shouldn't make such a remark, didn't agree with the statement.
