Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Damini Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, has revealed that Real Madrid winger Vinícius Júnior and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown are part of an exclusive group chat where discussions are currently underway to bring both sports icons to Nigeria.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN UK, the singer shared that he, Vinícius Jr., and Jaylen Brown form what they refer to as their "Seven group chat".
"Now we have a 7 team. It’s me, Vini, and I don’t know if you know Jaylen Brown. Yeah, that’s our Seven group chat," Burna Boy explained.
When asked about the conversations happening within the trio's chat, Burna Boy noted that arranging a joint trip to Nigeria tops their current agenda.
"It’s a lot of things. The last conversation we had is bringing all of them to Nigeria," he stated.
During the interview, the singer also opened up about establishing his football academy in Nigeria, revealing that a documentary about community football in Jamaica inspired him to invest his personal funds to help young athletes reach top-tier global clubs like Manchester United.
"So I just started throwing my money at it," he said.
Reflecting on his friendships across the sports world, Burna Boy recalled meeting former France international Paul Pogba during his 30th birthday celebration in the United States after the midfielder unexpectedly showed up at his home.
He also recounted bumping into England captain Harry Kane during an uncle's birthday dinner, humorously adding, "We just ran into him having dinner. And, yeah, just dragged him to the party."
Addressing football history, Burna Boy named former Super Eagles star Austin "Jay-Jay" Okocha as his ultimate football GOAT, arguing that the former Bolton Wanderers midfielder deserves far greater recognition.
"Obviously Jay-Jay Okocha, and I’ll tell you why. Because I feel like he—he hasn’t gotten the flowers that he deserves. You feel me? I feel like his name should be called in the leagues of, like, the—the legends’ legends," Burna Boy asserted.
He went on to state that Okocha's legacy should be ranked above legendary Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho among football's greatest players:
"I think you should even call Jay-Jay Okocha’s name before you call Ronaldinho," he concluded.
“We have a ‘7 team,’ with a group chat, me, Vinicius Jr., and Jaylen Brown. We chat about a lot of things. The last conversation we had was bringing all of them to Nigeria.”
