Nollywood actress, Toni Tone has said that a woman's beauty shouldn't be used to determine how she's treated by men.
The actress stated this while speaking on concerns raised when a beautiful woman is cheated on.
Toni Toni shared: '“How could he cheat on someone so beautiful?”
“She’s too pretty to have been cheated on.”
People may mean well when saying this, but I now realise such statements reinforce the notion that our level of ‘beauty’ should determine the level of respect men give us. It’s harmful.
Whether a woman is perceived as ‘beautiful’ or not shouldn’t even come in to justifying or criticising how she is being treated. Beauty shouldn’t be a determining factor when it comes to the respect we’re receiving. We should be respected as people. Not for being seen as pretty'.
