Afrobeat artiste, Seun Kuti, has declared his support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central District in the Senate, following her accusation of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
During an interview on Arise TV, Senator Akpoti alleged that Akpabio was targeting her and obstucting her motion for the Ajaokuta Steel Complex because she refused his sexual advances.
Since the Kogi lawmaker made this revelation, she has faced heavy criticisms from her female colleagues in the Senate.
In an Instagram live session, Kuti stated that he stands with Akpoti 100 percent, believing this may not be the first time the Senate President has faced accusations of sexual harassment.
The singer questioned the silence of celebrities and feminists who have chosen not to speak on Akpoti’s behalf.
He lamented the silence of these so-called activists, who were vocal in expressing their opinions when Burna Boy reneged on his promise to Sophia Egbueje but have remained silent on important issues.
Kuti said, “About the sexual harassment case in the Senate, I stand with the Senator [Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan] 100 per cent.
“Because she isn’t even the first one to make such an allegation [against the Senate President]. It’s appalling that all these so-called women activists are all quiet.
“They have something to say about Burna Boy’s alleged reneged promise to Sophia Egbueje but shy away from important matters…
“These kinds of things cannot continue in this country. What that woman [Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan] is saying is very serious. And the celebrities will not come out to support her in this kind of matter, the way everybody had something to say to defend Annie against 2face.
“Many of these celebrities, especially Nollywood actors and actresses are benefiting from the government through fraudulent grants so they can never come out to speak on this kind of matter…. I can’t openly protest to demand justice for Natasha but I implore Nigerian women to support her.”
