Captain of the national team of Nigeria, William Troost-Ekong has backed his teammate, Alex Iwobi to break all the records before him.
The Fulham midfielder is on course to become Nigeria’s all-time record appearance maker and Troost-Ekong is confident the former Arsenal midfielder would hit the milestone.
Iwobi made his 90th appearance for Nigeria during their 4-1 win over Gabon on Thursday and is now just 22 games behind Ahmed Musa, who holds the record as the most capped Nigerian player in history.
The former Everton midfielder started his international journey with the Super Eagles in October 2015, in a friendly against the DR Congo
Troost-Ekong told reporters in Rabat on Saturday, “I’m sure for him to achieve 90 caps is something really, really special.”
Iwobi is now holding the record as the first Nigerian player to reach a milestone of 300 appearances in the Premier League.
“For him to be the Nigerian player with the most Premier League appearances, with all the names that we’ve had there before, is something special,” Troost-Ekong added.
“He’s set to break all the records that we have here in the coming years. And a player that has grown to become so mature. So, when we talk about leadership in our team, Alex is definitely a big part of that.
I’m hoping he’ll end up breaking all the records but I know that he’s also focused on getting back to the World Cup and trying to win Afcon too to crown this generation.”
It would not be Iwobi’s first World Cup appearance if Nigeria qualified as the former Arsenal man played in the 2018 edition with the Super Eagles.
