113 health professionals down with COVID-19- Health Minister

Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire

The number of frontline health workers affected by COVID-19 in Nigeria is 113, Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire has revealed.

He made this statement while answering questions at the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.

Clarifying widespread rumours that several health workers were affected, the minister said the number of infected personnel were not all public health officials.

He added that a good number of those affected were from private hospitals, hence the need for healthcare workers to treat this virus with PPEs.

"113 are infected. Not all of them are public health officials. A good number from private hospitals. We speak against treating coronavirus in private hospitals. They are at risk. Some healthcare workers have no business handling coronavirus. Hence the reason we provided PPE," he said.

However, Ehanire stressed the fact that they are less PPEs. Hear him speak:

"Nonetheless, there is a global shortage of PPEs. Many are struggling for PPEs and masks. These things are really scare and we are doing all that we can to make our frontline workers have these requirements before treating cases."
