Shehu Sani urges AU to remove monuments, buildings, streets of slave masters in Africa

Former Nigerian senator Shehu Sani has charged the African Union to set a guideline for the removal of monuments, building and streets named to glorify slave trades and vicious colonialists.

The Nigerian politician made this known on Thursday on his official Twitter account.

This comes as angry protesters across Europe have been pulling down statues and monuments in remembrance of past leaders who have promoted slavery across the world.

The actions come as a condemnation of the unlawful murder of Black American, George Floyd, by Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, as well as the racial injustice netted in black across the globe.

Sani said, "The @_AfricanUnion should without hesitation set a guideline, a template & a dateline for the removal of monuments & renaming of buildings or streets that glorifies slave traders & vicious colonialists within our continent.

"We must open the old wounds for a permanent healing," he said
