Nigerians have reacted to the vote by the House of Representatives against the motion for the castration of rapists.

The House, at the plenary on Thursday, considered and adopted a motion on the rising cases of sexual violence in Nigeria.

A member, Mr James Faleke, had recommended that persons found guilty of rape should be castrated.

Just before the prayer was subjected to a voice vote, the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, however, asked what would happen to an older female who rapes a younger male.

The comment generated noise in the chamber, The PUNCH reports.

Putting the prayer to vote, the nays had it.

This has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians who expressed their feelings on social media amid the rape and murder of Uwaila Omozuwa and Barak Bello.

Below are some reactions gathered by MyNigeria.com from Twitter and Instagram.

sir_tijaja wrote: "Most of them are on the table na. What do you expect".

Edward_Onoriode tweeted: "Whoever presented castration is an idiot. What if it was later discovered the accused person was wrongly accused na had been castrated? Personally, I feel the best punishment should be 24 years imprisonment with hard labour and no parole".

nancy_uzo: "Because they know many politicians are on this table".

Zlatanbenjamin: "That bill was dead on arrival. We haven't even secured sure 10 years imprisonment for rapists, we are gunning for castration. Moreover, Nigeria would face UN sanctions for that".

mzmeemee1: "Because most of them are guilty that's why".

PrinceMerit_A tweeted: "We mustn't take decisions base on emotions. Yes, what is happening is terrible but don't forget, a lot of guys are been wrongly accused and jailed. At least, maximum sentencing. Let begin with that".
