The Nigeria Medical Association, Osun State branch, on Tuesday demanded an amendment to the 2006 UNIOSUN Establishment Law, which stipulated that for anyone to be appointed the vice-chancellor, such a person must possess a doctorate.

Addressing journalists in Osogbo, the Chairman, Osun NMA, Dr Razaq Akindele, alleged that the recent advertisement for the position of the vice-chancellor of the Osun State University that specified that only candidates with doctoral degrees could apply was a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise the medical lecturers, who possess the postgraduate fellowship.

Akindele recommended that another advertisement for the position of the VC that would stipulate the possession of PhD or its equivalent certificate, including fellowship, be immediately placed by the management of the institution.

Akindele stated, “We demand that a fresh advertisement be put forward stating the possession of PhD or its equivalent certificate, including fellowship. In the alternative, the possession of PhD be removed and replaced with a scholar of international repute like that of the University of Ibadan.

“The fresh advertisement should also exclude all external origin, bias and deliberate specifications that have no major bearing on the functions of the university chief executive as separate from only a researcher in the university.

“Osun State has witnessed harmony and stability in the health and education sectors under the present administration due to proactive and rational ways of conducting the affairs of these sectors by Mr Governor. The NMA in Osun has made several peaceful moves to abate any disharmony in any of these sectors.”
