Below is a list of Nigerian monarchs who have been dethroned by higher authorities.

The list was compiled in reaction to the dethronement of Muhammadu Sanusi II as Emir of Kano by the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje-led Kano State Government.

The news of the dethronement sparked a debate among Nigerians on whether such treatment could be meted out to first-class monarchs like the Oba of Benin and the Ooni of Ife.

A list shared on Twitter by @MustaphaOlatu19 shows that some first-class monarchs have faced similar treatment meted out to Sanusi who was dethroned on Monday.

1. Alaafin Of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi Adeniran: He was dethroned by Awolowo in 1955

2. Ojuromi Of Uromi: He was dethroned in 2016 by Adams Oshiomole

3. Oba Of Benin, Ovonramwen: Expedited by British in 1897

4. Deji Of Akure: Dethroned by the traditional council of kingmakers in 2005.

5. Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki: Dethroned after 8 years of rule by Attahiru Bafarawa who was ally to Sanni Abacha.

6. Emir of Kano Sanusi I: Dethroned by Sir Ahmadu Bello as a result of the power tussle in Kano.

7. Emir of Kano Sanusi II: Dethroned by the Kano Executive council under the present Government led by Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2020.
