Mr Wale Edun, an international board member of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, has paid glowing tributes to Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Friday at 99.

Edun, who is chairman of the Foundation in Nigeria, expressed deep sadness over the incident.

He also offered condolences, on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Africa and Nigeria, to Her Majesty the Queen and the entire Royal Family, particularly Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex who is the Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation.

He praised the late Duke’s “fantastic and enduring legacy of encouragement, support and empowerment of young people through the Award.”

According to him, the scheme, which Prince Philip founded in 1956 for young people aged 14-24, operates in over 130 countries and territories of the world, including 17 African countries.

“In Nigeria, the Award currently operates in 11 states and FCT with over 28,000 young people having participated since it was re-launched here in 2014.

“Numbers continue to grow rapidly with the full support of government at all levels, led by the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sport.

“He is gone to rest but his legacy lives on," Edun said.
