D'banj: Nigerians react on learning that Seyitan's lawyer once defended an accused rapist

Concerns have been raised over a former attorney general of Ogun State, Mrs Abimbola Akeredolu, SAN, who has been named as the legal support of Seyitan Babatayo who accused singer D'banj of rape.

This was after Twitter users dug up a case she handled in 2019 in which she defended one of the four students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, accused of raping a female student of the institution.

During the case, Akeredolu had insisted that the victim who was 17 at the time of the alleged incident was not naive.

While cross-examining the young lady, Akeredolu tried to bring her nightlife into question and also revealed that she dropped a song in 2017 when she claimed she was raped.

She then proceeded to read some of the lyrics to the song to buttress her claim that the lady was not naive at the time.

It reads: “I feel so lonely, so paralysed, got no guy to call my own, so when I saw the look in your eyes, I couldn’t help to fantasize. I feel somebody coming home, meaningful love with depth and potential is what I need all the time. Just want you to be mine, so grab on my waist, let’s bust up the place. Anything that you do is fine, that’s why there is no need to be shy".

Akeredolu then provided photographs which showed the lady scantily clad just to prove that she wasn't naive at the time.

In reaction to the way Akeredolu defended one of the accused in the 2019 rape case, some Nigerians on Twitter believe it doesn't in any way show that she lacks the moral standing to defend Seyitan.

MyNigeria.com gathered some reactions from Twitter as seen below.

@Omojuwa wrote: "I see a lot of people are concerned that this is the same lawyer defending Seyitan. Well, this is exactly the sort of lawyer you need for a case like Seyitan’s. But if you want a nice and friendly lawyer, there are loads of them. Nice and friendly don’t win these things though".

@Penky59420611 wrote: "Exactly only someone who isn't afraid to get rough or play dirty (in a professional way of course)can represent her without getting intimidated in court".

@OHJHAY777 wrote: "You have a lawyer with a known history of emotional manipulation on a case where most events so far look like manipulation. It would be pretentious to not assume that she is doing whatever she has to, moral or immoral, to win this case too. Except we just concerned with who wins"
