Cholera kills 104 in Jigawa, Kogi communities

At least, 104 persons were reportedly killed in Jigawa and Kogi states as cholera hits the two northern states.

While 100 people died in Jigawa in 19 out of the 27 local government areas in less than a month as a result of the outbreak of the disease, four were said to have died in Daba, an agrarian community in Kogi State.

The Permanent Secretary in Jigawa State Ministry of Health, Dr Salisu Mu’azu, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse on Wednesday.

He stated that a team comprising state health officials with the assistance of WHO and Doctors without Borders was doing its best to rescue those brought to state health facilities on time.

NAN reports that the situation had become very critical in the last few days, with eight persons reportedly died in a small community of Unguwar Kudu quarters of Zareku, in Miga Local Government Area.

In Kogi, our correspondent learnt that some persons in the Daba community were currently suffering from the ailment.Abubakar Suleiman, an indigene of the community, said, “This happened because my community could not access potable water. We are using this medium to call on the government to do something before more lives will be lost.”

The Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Saka Haruna Audu, could not be reached as of the time of filing this report, as several calls and messages put across to his phone line went unanswered.
