Passenger docked for allegedly stealing taxi driver’s cell phone, N20,000

A 27-year-old passenger, Tolu Omini-Ekpo on Tuesday appeared at the Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a taxi driver’s cell phone valued N76,000 and N20,000 taxi fare.

The police charged Omini-Ekpo with theft. The suspect pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution counsel, Insp. Ajaga Agboko told the court that the defendant committed the offence on March 9 at 2 p.m. at Eko Hotel and Suite along Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island Lagos.

He alleged that the defendant stole a techno phone valued at N76,000 and N20,000, taxi fare, belonging to the taxi driver, Mr Mustapha Adebayo.

Agboko alleged that the defendant, who asked for the driver’s phone to calculate some figures, took off with it after he alighted.

Agboko added that the defendant also stole an Infinix phone valued at N46,000 belonging to one Mr Moses Okedeji. Agboko said that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Magistrate T.A. Anjorin-Ajose admitted the defendant to bail in the N20,000 with two sureties in like sum. He adjourned the case until April 6 for mention.
