Security agents foiled an attempted jailbreak in the Kano Central Prison, Kurmawa in Kano State on the evening of Thursday, April 22, 2021.

Vanguard reports that the incident occurred when the inmates numbering about 150 staged a protest that officials should allow them to consume illicit drugs and use other items such as handset smuggled into the facility by yet-to-be-identified persons.

Legit.ng gathered it also reported that the inmates were protesting the poor quality of food they were served for iftar (Muslim breaking of fast), despite a befitting arrangement put in place by a popular philanthropist.

The public relations officer, Kano state correctional center, DSC Musbahu Nasarawa, said the mayhem was not as a result of the food, adding that the inmates wanted officials to allow them to consume illicit drugs, Legit.ng said.

TheCable also reports that sporadic gunshots were heard within the area where the prison is located, as residents prepared to break their Ramadan fast on Thursday, April 22.

Nasarawa said: “We have put down the rebellion through the concerted efforts of the prison officials." He further explained that violence broke out when prison officials attempted to retrieve illicit items found with some of the prisoners. Nasarawa, however, added that normalcy has now been restored to the area.
