Presidency denies granting Maryam Sanda pardon

Convicted murderer - Maryam Sanda Convicted murderer - Maryam Sanda

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Retd.) has debunked reports claiming that he granted Maryam Sanda a presidential pardon.

Recall that Maryam was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, Maryam Sanda by an Abuja High Court.

A statement by the president's Personal Assistant on New Media, Bashir Ahmad quoted the National Correctional Service stating that the convicted murderer did not benefit from the decongestion of prison.

According to Bashir's tweet, "The news making the rounds that Maryam Sanda, a murder convict, was granted presidential pardon is FAKE, very unrealistic and an attempt to rubbish the good intention of President Buhari towards decongesting the custodial centres, National Correctional Service says in a statement."

MyNigeria.com reports that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on April 8, approved the release of 2,600 prisoners in the country.

Earlier today, more than 60 inmates were granted amnesty by the FG in Plateau State, MyNigeria reported.
