The political parties deregistered yesterday by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, have threatened to go to court.

INEC yesterday deregistered 74 parties with claims that they failed to win a single political seat in the 2019 general elections.

According to the Constitution:

"A political party can be deregistered if there is a breach of any of the requirements for registration

"A political party can also be deregistered on failure to win at least 25% of votes cast in one State of the Federation in a Presidential election or one local Government of a state in a Governorship election

"A political party can be deregistered if it fails to win at least one ward in the Chairmanship Election; one seat in the national or state House of Assembly election; or one seat in a Councillorship election."

Reacting to the development, All Blending Party (ABP)'s national secretary, George Moses, vowed that his party would drag INEC to court over the decision.

The news was found to be shocking to the national secretary of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Fasogbon Akinboye, who vowed to contest INEC's decision in court.

The vice-chairman of the southeast chapter of Fresh Democratic Party (FDP), Chizoba Onu, stated that she didn't find the decision by the electoral body to be a thing of surprise.

According to her, Nigeria doesn't practice democracy as done in other parts of the world.
