The police in Ekiti State on Monday arraigned a 33-year-old man, Sola Adebayo, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates' Court over alleged fraud and stealing.

The police prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade alleged that the defendant and others at large obtained N2.8 million from one Mr Akingbe Collins on the pretext of making fortune charm for him.

Okunade also alleged that the defendant, who is standing trial on a two-count charge of fraud and theft, "stole one golden wristwatch valued at the sum of N250,000 belonging to the complainant."

The police prosecutor told the court that "the defendant and others at large allegedly committed the offence sometimes in the month of October 2019 at about 1:00 a.m at Odo via Ado-Ekiti."

According to him, the offences contravened section 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

Okunade, however, asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

But Adebayo pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His counsel, Mr Stephen Olumuagun, urged the court to grant Adebayo bail, promising that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, saying one of the sureties must be a civil servant.

The chief magistrate adjourned the case until January 15, 2020, for hearing.
