Ondo nabs 25 residents for violating environmental law

No fewer than 25 persons were arrested by men of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority for allegedly violating an environmental law of the state.

The suspects were arrested during the monthly environmental sanitation held across the state on Saturday.PUNCH Metro learnt that the residents were charged to court and fined.

The General Manager of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo, lamented that people in the state were fond of committing environmental offences, adding that a surveillance team was set up to arrest and prosecute culprits.

Adeyemo said, “Twenty-five people were arrested during the environmental sanitation and they have been charged to court.

“Dumping of waste indiscriminately has now become a norm among people of Ondo State, becoming a major issue threatening public health. Though the refuse will be removed, the government has also put in place stringent measures to bring sanitation violators to book.”

The Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Environment, Mr Akin Asaniyan, said despite some challenges, the state would regain its leadership position in cleanliness in Nigeria.
