Nnamdi Azikwe advised that Nigeria must disintegrate in 1964

When the Northern and Southern protectorate was amalgamated in 1914, many believed the move by the colonial masters was to serve their selfish interests.

Those who lived through the days understood what the country stood for. At that time, the country was already caught in the web of deep differences.

Several years down the line after its independence, the country continues to suffer on all front. Be it religion, beliefs, culture, and so on, the difference was clear.

It was clear a united Nigeria won't work.

Founding fathers, Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Tafawa Bello, Nnamdi Azikwe raised concerns and predicted what has turned out to be a menace.

Obafemi Awolowo in a 1947 speech said: "Nigeria is not a nation. It is a mere geographical expression. There are no 'Nigerians' in the same sense as there are 'English' 'Welsh' or 'French'.

The word 'Nigerian' is merely a distinctive appellation to distinguish those who live within the boundaries of Nigeria and those who are not."

His words are indeed true, over this period, the calls for secession have intensified with factions within the various regions basing these calls on factors including the rising spate of insecurity and abductions.

Another nationalist, Nnamdi Azikwe shared his thought on Nigeria's unity in 1964.

Should the politicians fail to heed this warning, then will venture the prediction that the experience of the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be a child's play if ever it comes to our turn to play such a tragic role."
