Nigerian Jehovah's Witnesses refuse blood transfusion for their sick child (video)

The parents of a child who are Jehovah's Witnesses have locked up their baby as a way of preventing the child from getting medication that would have resulted in the baby receiving blood transfusion.

A video which was shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who met with the parents in Sapele, Delta state, shows the baby with a swollen head.

The baby identified as Precious suffers from Hydrocephalus, and a surgery required to help restore her health would include blood transfusion.

According to the father, he welcomes medical care for his 1-year old daughter but won't entertain any idea of blood transfusion because it goes against the doctrine of Jehovah's Witnesses.

''We in Jehovah's witnesses, we don't take blood. I would not want to transfuse blood into the child. We will not accept blood transfusion. If in the course of surgery they would transfuse blood in the child, we would not want that. I don't want my baby to die but that is our faith'' he said.

The video has drawn angry reactions from Nigerians on social media who wonder why the baby is allowed to go through such pains because of a doctrine.
