NSCDC officer arrested for firing shots in market over alleged assault on wife

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a Deputy Superintendent of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing shots into the air during a tense confrontation with traders at a market in the Kubwa area of Abuja.

According to the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, a distress call was received on October 25, 2026, at approximately 1:50 p.m., reporting an armed man firing sporadically in the market.

Operatives attached to the Kubwa Police Division were promptly deployed to the scene, where they successfully disarmed and arrested the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Samuel had rushed to the market armed with a pistol after receiving reports that some traders had assaulted his wife. During an ensuing argument with the traders, he fired several shots into the air.

Authorities recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from the suspect during the operation. Police confirmed that he remains in custody and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of investigations.

Following the incident, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi urged personnel from sister security agencies to exercise restraint and notify local police divisions before conducting operations within the territory to prevent avoidable clashes.
