Minimum wage: NLC boss fumes, indicts 9 Nigerian governors

The president of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Ayuba Wabba, has given his voice against the refusal of some state governors to pay the agreed N30, 000 minimum wage.

Without mentioning names, Wabba on Wednesday, March 10, alleged that one of the governors use Garba Muhammad, the sponsor of the bill that seeks to move the minimum wage legislation from the exclusive list to the concurrent list to undo civil servants, The Nation reports.

He disclosed that the NLC leadership expressed shock to know that these governors complain of not being able to pay the new wage after President Muhammadu Buhari's directive.

Wabba went on to claim that from reports made available to him, Nigerian lawmakers earn N13 million each month.

His words:

“We are then taken aback that some governors; let me mention that the governors are nine – because some of them gave us this information; they are only nine out of the 36 that are anti-workers, led by the governor of Muhammad’s home state.“We are told and nobody has contradicted this fact, that they (lawmakers) collect N13m per month. How can he say that the current minimum wage of N30, 000 is too much for the Nigerian workers?"Wabba called on Muhammad to withdraw the bill if he wants peace in his constituency and still hopes to end his career as a politician on a good note.

He said:

“He must withdraw that bill with immediate effect if he wants peace to reign in his family and in his constituency and if he wants to end well as a politician because the Nigerian workers cannot be taken for granted.”Moreover, the union's leader alleged that a northwest governor has refused to pay sacked workers in his state.
