Residents of Egbeada in the Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State have urged the state government to remove an unidentified corpse from their community.

Punch Metro gathered on Thursday that the deceased was lynched by a mob on January 15, 2021, after an unsuccessful attempt to snatch a mobile phone from a woman.

The deceased, alongside an alleged accomplice, reportedly stabbed their victim with a knife, an action which made her to raise the alarm.

Passersby were said to have lynched the suspect and set fire on his corpse, while his accomplice escaped.

A foodstuff dealer at the popular Egbeada Market, Mrs Angela Obinna, said, “The corpse has been here since that day and it now smells. The odour is affecting sales here as our customers no longer feel free to patronise us.”

Another trader, Mr Felix Uzondu, said he had been scared to go to his shop since the incident occurred.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Association in Imo, Dr Chidiebere Okwara, said the corpse could constitute a health hazard.

“A corpse should not be allowed to lie on the street. We hope that relevant agencies of government will remove it as soon as possible,” he added.
