Abdullahi Ganduje Abdullahi Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has banned street begging done by children referred to as almajiri.

Ganduje disclosed this through his spokesman, Abba Anwar, during the launching of Basic Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA).

The event also saw an offer for 7,500 voluntary teachers.

The governor stated that the decision, which is part of ensuring compulsory free education from primary to secondary level, will also integrate the almajiri system to help end street begging.

“When Almajiri are caught begging, it is not only that beggar is caught, but his parents or guardians.

“Such parents or guardians would be taken to court to face the wrath of the law,” Ganduje was quoted as saying.
