The Federal Government has unveiled a temporary employment scheme to engage Nigerians for the duration of three months.

The scheme christened "Special Public Works Programme" is monitored by the National Directorate of Employment to engage young Nigerians in rural local governments.

So far the scheme has tried to alleviate poverty from Nigerians by engaging 40,000 young Nigerians in its pilot phase. However, there is a caveat here- only young Nigerians between ages 18 to 30 are eligible.

So far, 40,000 Nigerians in eight states have enjoyed these benefits.

The states are Ebonyi, Borno, Edo, Ekiti, Adamawa, Kwara, Katsina, Jigawa.

The beneficiaries are expected to carry out clearing/cleaning of streets, markets, schools, drains, etc; and also maintenance of rural feeder roads.

The SPW is a 3-month paid initiative aimed at engaging young unemployed Nigerians in rural areas, during the dry (non-farming) season.

No skills or formal education are required for the SPW Program. The target areas are rural communities.
