Experts have called for the need to include data while developing sustainable policies for Agriculture.

This call was made by environmental policy and strategy specialist, Debisi Araba during a multi-stakeholder engagement on the challenges faced by smallholder farmers amidst COVID-19.

Debisi believed information and data should drive how farmers should plant and what they make from selling farm produce.

Commenting on the knowledge deficit by farmers in Nigeria, he said:

"Agriculture and food systems in Nigeria are very weak. In 2012, we had floods in Nigeria and it affected food productivity. Some farmers, unfortunately, committed suicide."

Going further, he added:

"A lot of smallholder farmers are cut off from data which should drive their decision making. The reality is that information should drive how much you plant. What you plant and how much make from the farm."

The MD of Africa's Green Revolution Forum stressed the need for data to continually drive the government's agricultural policies.
