Two policemen were killed on duty by gunmen who opened fire on them at the Okija area of Mile One in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The two officers were attached to the Mile One Police Station, Diobu.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 8 pm.

An eyewitness, Okey, a taxi driver told journalists on Wednesday, November 3, that the assailants were in a vehicle when they launched the attack.

“Just past 8 pm last night, I was driving past the area then I heard gunshots. They were in a car on speed. Next thing, two policemen were on the ground with blood.

“They were taken unawares. I think the gunmen took their rifles. When it happened, most of the shops had closed for the day. I have never run the way I ran yesterday (Tuesday) with my car,” he said.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm the attack on our men posted to Okija Street on stop and search by unknown gunmen last night.

“Two police officers were killed. An investigation has been ordered by the Commissioner of Police.

“One Toyota Corolla with a number plate, Rivers ABU 380 AW, used by the attackers was abandoned. One AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the officers was carted away,” he said.
