The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to spend the funds recovered from the loot of former military ruler, Sani Abacha, on road projects.

According to reports, vast assets looted by former military ruler are to be repatriated to Nigeria from the US and Jersey.

Once recovered, the $321m (£247m) will be spent on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, the second Niger Bridge and the Abuja-Kano Expressway, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, is quoted as saying by Vanguard.

He added that a formal agreement for the return of the funds is to be signed next week.

Almost $7.6m (£5.8m) in assets recovered from former Nigerian Delta State Governor James Ibori are also part of that deal, says Mr Malami, according to the Vanguard, as well as assets linked to former minister Diezani Alison-Madueke and businessman Kolawole Aluko.

Abacha ruled Nigeria with an iron first after seizing power in 1993 until his sudden death in June 1998 after an apparent heart attack. [BBC]
