The spokesman for the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah, on Thursday, revealed that over 287 rape and 22 sodomy cases were recorded in the state last year.

He made the revelation at a women summit in Katsina, which had as its theme: ‘The way out of rising rape cases in Katsina State’.

The summit was organised by the state Ministry of Local Government and a non-governmental organisation, Al-Ummah Support Initiative.

Isah said out of the 287 reported rape cases, 236 were under investigation.
He said most of the victims were between the ages of three and 14.

Isah complained of lack of cooperation from parents to pursue rape cases in courts, adding that their attitude provided opportunities for a rapist to escape punishment.

“We need the cooperation of parents to provide detailed information to the police to pursue rape cases in our courts,” he stated.

Governor Aminu Masari’s Special Adviser on Girl Child Education and Development, Hajia Amina Mani, had earlier advocated death punishment for rapists.

She maintained that the death penalty was the only solution to end the problem and save the lives of rape victims.

The special adviser revealed that the Department of Girls Child Education received cases of rape almost on daily basis from across the 34 local government areas of the state.

She added that to minimise the problem and ensure that rapists were punished, the department had employed the services of competent lawyers to pursue rape cases in courts.

“The lawyers will pursue all cases of rape in courts to ensure that verdicts are given against rapists,” Mani stated.
