Ride-hailing company Bolt has launched a new health insurance initiative for its driver-partners in Nigeria in partnership with Bastion Health Limited, as part of efforts to improve driver welfare and support the long-term growth of its platform.
The new offering is designed for drivers, many of whom operate independently and often lack access to employer-backed healthcare. Under the plan, drivers can subscribe to affordable health insurance packages through a pooled system that gives them access to discounted premiums. They also have the option to extend coverage to family members.
According to Bolt, the initiative is aimed at addressing a gap in healthcare access within the gig economy while strengthening support for the thousands of drivers who depend on the platform for their livelihood.
Weyinmi Aghadiuno, Bolt’s Head of Regulatory and Policy for Africa, said the move reflects the company’s recognition of the role drivers play in the mobility ecosystem.
“Driver wellbeing is critical to the long-term health of the mobility ecosystem. This partnership is about making healthcare more accessible and affordable so drivers can stay healthy while earning,” she said.
The health plans are structured to be flexible and easy to access. Unlike many traditional insurance packages, the pooled model helps reduce costs and removes long waiting periods, making it more practical for drivers.
Through Bastion Health’s digital platform, drivers can manage the process from sign-up to usage with ease.
Bolt added that improving drivers’ access to healthcare could also have wider benefits, including safer roads, as healthier drivers are better able to work effectively.
The company said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to support drivers through partnerships that provide financial, safety and wellbeing benefits.
