Africa’s richest man and President of the Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has revealed that truck drivers employed by his company earn higher salaries than a large number of Nigerian graduates.

In a video shared on TVC’s X handle on Tuesday, Dangote responded to recent allegations by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

The union had accused him and Sayyu Dantata of anti-union practices and attempts to dominate the country’s downstream oil and gas distribution sector.

NUPENG also threatened a nationwide strike from September 8 over the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks by the Dangote Refinery.

Addressing the concerns, Dangote dismissed fears of mass job losses, insisting that the introduction of CNG trucks would instead create employment opportunities for about 24,000 people, since each vehicle requires at least six staff members to operate.

He further noted that Dangote drivers enjoy one of the most competitive pay structures in the sector, earning close to three to four times the national minimum wage, with some drivers taking home salaries higher than that of degree holders.

According to him, employees who maintain a clean record of five years without accidents also qualify for housing loans as part of the company’s welfare benefits.

“Our drivers earn more than graduates. If you check their monthly pay, it’s almost four times the minimum wage,” Dangote said.
