The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc, Moruf Oseni, has reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to innovation, inclusive banking, and customer satisfaction as the financial institution marked its 80th anniversary in Lagos.

Oseni, who spoke at the bank’s recent anniversary gala, tagged “Timeless Elegance,” described the milestone as a celebration of resilience and a renewed pledge to continue delivering value through technology-driven solutions.

Wema Bank is 80 years strong—and still driven by purpose, innovation, and people. Our legacy is one of trust, and the future holds even more promise,” Oseni said.

He highlighted the bank’s transformation from its inception in 1945 as Agbonmagbe Bank into one of Nigeria’s most innovative banks, noting that its digital banking platform, ALAT, had positioned it as a pioneer in Africa’s financial services landscape.

Chairman of the Board of Directors, Oluwayemisi Olorunshola, in her remarks, reflected on the bank’s journey and reaffirmed its commitment to economic empowerment, especially for women.

She cited the bank’s initiative, SARA by Wema, which she said has reached over 400,000 unbanked women, disbursed N75bn in low-interest loans, and created over 900 jobs.

“My journey is a testimony to what’s possible when women are empowered. Wema Bank is walking the talk in championing gender inclusion,” she said.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde; the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun; and the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who commended the bank for its role in Nigeria’s economic growth.

Makinde praised Wema Bank’s resilience and digital transformation, describing it as a model for other indigenous institutions. “Wema Bank’s journey over the past eight decades shows what can be achieved with vision and consistency,” he said.
