Emefiele resumes duty amid tight security

Godwin Emefiele, Governor of Central Bank Nigeria Godwin Emefiele, Governor of Central Bank Nigeria

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele resumed work yesterday in his Abuja office.

But officers of the Department of State Services (DSS) increased their presence in the building, perhaps to provide additional security for him.

The Nation learnt that “Emefiele entered the building in the afternoon followed by some DSS personnel”.

Officially, at least two DSS officials are always around him, but yesterday, a source at the CBN said about five DSS officials were seen around the apex bank’s boss.

“The DSS officials did not harass anybody or storm the CBN. Don’t mind them,” the official told The Nation.

A statement by CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisiobi, said: “The Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has resumed duty after his annual vacation abroad.

“Mr. Emefiele, who proceeded on leave in December 2022, resumed work today, (yesterday), January 16, 2023. The governor resumed with renewed vigour to perform his duty ahead of the first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the year scheduled for January 23 to 24, 2023.

Nwanisiobi said “Emefiele remains committed to performing the task before him in line with his oath of office and the policy direction of President Muhammadu Buhari,” urging Nigerians to “continue to support the policies of the apex bank aimed at ensuring a stable financial system and the Nigerian economy in general”.

He thanked members of the public for keeping faith with the CBN.

Also, the DSS has said reports that it invaded the CBN to arrest Emefiele were false.

In a terse statement yesterday in Abuja, it’s spokesman, Dr. Peter Afunanya, said: “The attention of the Department of State Services (DSS) has been drawn to the false news making the rounds that its operatives invaded the Central Bank of Nigeria and arrested its governor, today (yesterday January 16, 2023. This is fake news and quite misleading.”
