Decongest Lagos seaports, Nigeria has many ports - Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed worry over why the Lagos ports are being congested, though there are many other deep seaports in the country.

He conveyed the message via his social media handle on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

According to him, the congestion of ports in Lagos had created avoidable bottlenecks when it comes to imports and exports within the maritime sector.

He said: “The Nigeria maritime sector is robust and ought to grow stronger. We are blessed with several deep seaports.

"However, for some inexplicable reason, we tend to cluster our import and export activities around the Lagos ports, thus creating avoidable bottlenecks"

Recommending a solution, he said, “We should decongest Lagos ports via a deliberate policy of incentivizing end-destination priorities.

"It would curtail on-land heavy haulage transshipments that take a toll on our road infrastructure.”
