ECOWAS endorses Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for WTO

Former Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, for the position of director-general at the World Trade Organization, WTO.

ECOWAS President, Mahamadou Issoufou, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in which he urged other African countries to back her nomination

“Since the creation of the WTO on January 1, 1995, which is a successor to the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) established on January 1, 1948, no African has assumed the position of Director-General of the organisation", the statement read in part.

MyNigeria.com recalls that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's nomination was forwarded by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
