Tinubu promises reduction in transportation costs with CNG kits

In a significant move to alleviate the burden of high transportation costs on Nigerians, President Bola Tinubu has announced the imminent introduction of Compressed Natural Gas conversion kits.

The announcement was made during his address on the occasion of the nation’s 63rd Independence Anniversary in Abuja.

The Presidency, in an earlier statement, disclosed that the cost of CNG is expected to be approximately N250 per litre, signifying a promising prospect for cost-effective transportation solutions in the country.

In August, Tinubu established the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative targeting over 11,500 new CNG-enabled vehicles and 55,000 CNG conversion kits for existing PMS-dependent vehicles.

In his speech, President Tinubu emphasised the administration’s commitment to enhancing affordability and accessibility in public transportation.

He said, “Making the economy more robust by lowering transport costs will be key. In this regard, we have opened a new chapter in public transportation through the deployment of cheaper, safer Compressed Natural Gas buses across the nation. These buses will operate at a fraction of current fuel prices, positively affecting transport fares,” he said.

“New CNG conversion kits will start coming in soon as all hands are on deck to fast-track the usually lengthy procurement process. We are also setting up training facilities and workshops across the nation to train and provide new opportunities for transport operators and entrepreneurs.”
