'Serious business does not go with too much enjoyment' — Dangote to youth

Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has shared deeply personal lessons on wealth, success, and early financial missteps, warning aspiring entrepreneurs that excessive enjoyment is incompatible with building a serious business.

Speaking at a seminar, the President of Dangote Group reflected on his early
years as a young businessman, recalling how rapid financial success in the late 1970s led to lavish spending before hard life lessons reshaped his approach to wealth management.

"Serious business does not go with too much enjoyment," Dangote said. "They don't go together. You have to sacrifice one for the other. And if you don't, it will be almost impossible."

The business mogul recounted earning around ₦7,000 daily in 1978—a substantial fortune at the time, which allowed him to purchase a brand-new Mercedes-Benz 200 before the age of 23 for just ₦5,100.

At the peak of his early luxury purchases, Dangote accumulated 27 cars and eventually bought his own private aircraft without seeking professional advisory services.

"All what I wanted was just to buy a plane. I didn't go through any advisory or whatever. Nobody advised me. The only thing that they did was they put on the engines and I was listening to the engines of the aircraft," he recalled.

However, a major turning point occurred on March 31, 1983, when his aircraft crashed at Luton Airport in London. Dangote noted that surviving such setbacks provided him with the perspective and discipline required to build sustainable global businesses.

He urged young business leaders to prioritize long-term sacrifice and discipline over immediate gratification.
