Sack: We’ve been living in fear since Cardoso was appointed Governor – CBN staff

Central Bank of Nigeria Central Bank of Nigeria

Following the arrival of Dr Olayemi Cardoso as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, members of staff have raised alarm over the termination of appointments.

The CBN staff have revealed that they are constantly living in fear over the sacking, saying no department has been spared in the apex bank.

Their complaint comes after 50 of their colleagues were sacked on Monday, April 8, 2024. It was reported that about 117 people have lost their jobs in the last 20 days; cutting across 29 departments.

According to the report, the termination of appointments affects directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers and lower ranking staff.

One of the staff said; We have seen indiscriminate sacking in procurement, development finance and the medical services department. What it means is that other departments will follow soon.

“I am worried that they will come for all those that worked closely with the sacked directors. The apprehension is not good for productivity and it is also bad for the system.

Another senior staff member said: “A lot of people who received their sack letter just kept quiet and left their various offices. They feel helpless by the way the system is structured.”

Since Cardoso emergence, the CBN has undergone many changes both in policies and personnel.

Vendors have been reported to have expressed their dissatisfaction at the turn of events at the CBN. It was gathered that some vendors who completed their contract to the CBN last June have their payments withheld by the new management.

They claim there is suspicion that they may have benefitted from the management of the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
